Altai Republic’s Nature Parks and Protected Areas The Altai Republic’s government (AR) is in a process of setting up Nature Parks of regional status which will protect areas of environmental and cultural importance while allowing compatible human activities. There are now six parks established in the AR with a total area of 553,475 hectares (1,217,645 acres). This is the FSDA/AAP unofficial map.
There are Russian federally designated protected areas in addition to Nature Parks: Zapovedniks are strictly protected federal land, with, supposedly, no human access whatsoever allowed except for scientific research under permit. Altaisky Zapovednik has been in existence since about 1930; Katunsky Zapovednik was established in the early 90’s. Both have staff people who are Federal employees.
Zakazniks are areas for uses such as tourism and hunting. They have no management plans or staff at present.
